I am Professor of Applied Mathematics and Head of the Chair of Applied Mathematics at the University of Bayreuth.

Research Interests

• My research interests lie in nonlinear systems and control theory, with a focus on numerical and optimisation-based methods. This includes, for instance, model predictive control, numerical and AI-based methods for Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman PDEs, and the long-time dynamics of nonlinear systems. I also work on applications of these methods in engineering, science and economy.

Short CV

• April 2002 until today: Professor of Applied Mathematics, since August 2009 also Head of the Chair of Applied Mathematics within the Mathematical Institute of the Universität Bayreuth
• September 2015 until February 2016: Visiting Professor at the Schools of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and Mathematical and Physical Sciences of the University of Newcastle, Australia
  
• March 2004 until April 2004: Guest Professor at the Centre de Recherche Viabilité, Jeux, Contrôle, Université Paris-Dauphine
  
• October 1997 until March 2002: Wissenschaftlicher Assistent ("scientific assistant"), since July 2001 also Privatdozent ("private lecturer") in the Numerics, Dynamics and Optimization Group at the Fachbereich Mathematik of the Goethe-Universität Frankfurt a.M.
  
• March 1998 until February 1999: DFG Forschungsstipendium ("DFG research grant ") for visiting the Dipartimento di Matematica "Guido Castelnouvo" at the Universita di Roma "Sapienza"
  
• January 1997 until September 1997: Postdoc Grant from the Graduiertenkolleg Nichtlineare Probleme in Analysis, Geometrie und Physik at the Universität Augsburg
  
• April 1994 until December 1996: Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter ("research assistant") at the Universität Augsburg, from April 1995 within the DFG-Schwerpunkt Ergodentheorie, Analysis und effiziente Simulation dynamischer Systeme. Within this project I wrote my PhD-Thesis supervised by Fritz Colonius

• Appointment as a SIAM Fellow in the Class of 2025
• Inaugural Brockett-Willems Outstanding Paper Award for the best paper in Systems & Control Letters published between 2014 and 2018. The award was given for the paper "On the relation between strict dissipativity and turnpike properties", co-authored by Lars Grüne and Matthias A. Müller (Leibniz University Hannover)
• Preis für gute Lehre 2012 ("excellence in teaching award"), awarded by the Minister for Research of the state of Bavaria
• Nomination for the Preis für gute Lehre 2005 ("excellence in teaching award"), by the student representatives of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics
